The North Carolina High School Athletic Association crowned a new champion on Saturday as Holly Springs defeated Weddington 2-1 in the 7A girls soccer final, delivering the program’s first state title.
Weddington struck first in the third minute, converting a penalty kick by Kacey Clark to take an early lead, but the East regional champions answered swiftly.
Sorin Smith, the East regional MVP, leveled the score in the 15th minute with a striking long‑distance effort that showcased her range and composure, a performance that ultimately earned her tournament MVP honors.
The decisive moment arrived in the 48th minute when Gabby Barbee struck a well‑placed shot that put Holly Springs ahead, a goal that proved enough to preserve the lead through the final minutes.

Both teams were recognized for exemplary conduct, with Holly Springs’ Cataline Garrido and Weddington’s Genevieve Baptiste receiving the Sportsmanship Award, underscoring the values celebrated by the N.C. High School Athletic Association.
