Holy Trinity High School in Hicksville, Nassau County, has announced a two‑year suspension of its varsity football program, halting competitive play through the 2026‑27 and 2027‑28 seasons.
A program on pause
The decision follows the sudden resignation of head coach Cain Mack, who stepped down unexpectedly earlier this month.
Principal Brian Colomban confirmed that the school fully respects Mack’s choice and emphasized that the pause is intended to allow the program to be re‑imagined with fresh leadership.
Athletic Director Matthew Sloan will spearhead the search for a new coach, with an eye toward re‑establishing a junior varsity team for the 2027‑28 school year and rebuilding a varsity schedule for 2028‑29.
Even while the varsity squad is on hold, the school will continue to offer football‑specific training sessions in its weight room, ensuring that interested students can stay engaged and develop their skills.
Focus on broader values
Principal Colomban reiterated that Holy Trinity’s mission is anchored in faith, academic rigor and the safety of its students, noting that the school’s identity is not defined by any single athletic program.
He added that the pause provides a chance to reflect on how the football program can better serve the student body while reinforcing those core principles.
Looking ahead, the administration expressed confidence that the hiatus will ultimately strengthen the team’s culture and its alignment with the school’s broader educational goals.
