A community‑driven health initiative returns to Akron
The ninth edition of the Men’s Health Fair and Basketball Tip‑Off, organized by Hoop for Coop, will take place in downtown Akron, Ohio, offering a full day of activity from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
More than 40 vendors will showcase local businesses while 12 competitive games and 200 registered players add a spirited sporting element to the gathering.
Attendees can access over 250 free health screenings and pick up wellness information aimed at catching preventable conditions early.
The event’s roots trace back to the memory of Kimyata D. Cooper, a 34‑year‑old who suffered a fatal heart attack during a basketball game, prompting the founders to champion routine check‑ups and proactive lifestyle choices.
Jerome Moss, co‑founder of Hoop for Coop, stresses that the fair is as much about education as it is about recreation, urging men to prioritize regular medical visits.
Reverend Bishop Cameron Nelson has been a steady presence at the fair for three years, lending his voice to the message of holistic well‑being and community support.
With no admission fee and an open invitation to the public, the fair seeks to reinforce a culture where health awareness is celebrated alongside athletic competition.
