A Program in Transition
The University of Houston announced that it will not extend the contract of longtime head baseball coach Todd Whitting, bringing to a close a 16‑year tenure that began in 2011.
Whitting entered his final season under a contract that was set to expire, and the decision comes after the team posted its worst Big 12 performance in recent memory, finishing last with a 7‑23 league record.
During his early years, Whitting guided the Cougars to a Super Regional appearance in 2014 and helped secure three additional NCAA Tournament berths within the next four seasons, reviving a program that had been dormant.
The move to the Big 12 in 2024 raised expectations, but the team struggled to adapt, slipping to 12th, 11th and 14th place in successive seasons and compiling a 26‑61 record in conference play over three years.
Looking Ahead
Despite increased financial investment aimed at improving facilities and recruiting, the on‑field results failed to show improvement in 2026, prompting the administration to begin a search for a new leader. Athletic director Chris Pezman said the program will cast a wide net in its coaching hunt, with interviews potentially starting in the coming weeks.
