A historic rivalry returns to Audi Field
The nation’s capital will once again become the epicenter of HBCU football when Howard University and Hampton University meet at Audi Field on October 3, 2026. The contest, dubbed the ‘Battle of the Real HU,’ revives a rivalry that stretches back to 1908 and promises a showcase of tradition, talent and pride.
Game details and broadcast
Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. Eastern Time, and the game will be streamed live while also airing on HBCU GO and across major U.S. television markets that include New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia, Dallas and Atlanta. The broadcast plan underscores the event’s national significance and the growing appetite for historically Black college sports.
Series history
The series stands at 58‑44‑1 in favor of Hampton, a testament to decades of competition that has produced memorable moments. The most recent encounter on September 20, 2025, ended 34‑7 in Hampton’s favor, and the Pirates have taken three of the last four meetings at Audi Field, including a 48‑22 victory in the stadium’s inaugural game in 2021.
Howard’s recent momentum
Beyond the scoreboard, the matchup carries added weight because Howard has entered a period of dominance in the Mid‑Eastern Athletic Conference, capturing back‑to‑back championships in 2022 and 2023. The Bison will open the 2026 season against Alabama A&M on August 29, setting the stage for a fresh chapter in their storied program.
A celebration of HBCU football
Organizers have positioned Audi Field as the premier stage for this historic clash, aiming to elevate the profile of HBCU football and celebrate the cultural legacy of both institutions. The game is being billed as one of the most anticipated events in college football this year, drawing attention to the excellence and resilience of Black college athletics.
