Howard Jordan Takes the Helm at Groves High, Aiming to Revive Football Program

The new head coach brings a championship pedigree and plans to lead the team into a new era.

Howard Jordan has been hired as the new head football coach at Groves High, stepping into a program that has not tasted a winning season since 2014 and has not reached the playoffs since 2010.

He will replace Calvin Wells, who guided the team for the past four seasons, and takes over a squad that will compete in Class 5A next year.

Jordan, a 36‑year‑old former standout athlete, brings more than just playing experience; he previously captured a state wrestling championship at Turner County and earned two‑time state titles in the sport.

His coaching career includes a state title in 2019 at Irwin County, stints at Greenville High, Lithonia High, Hephzibah, and most recently at Westside‑Macon, where he also oversaw wrestling and track and field.

Beyond football, Jordan will also coach the wrestling team and the track and field program, a dual responsibility that reflects the school’s desire for a versatile leader.

A New Era for Groves Football

Groves athletic director Kevin Evans praised Jordan’s football acumen, his schematics, and his ability to connect with young athletes, noting that his energy and work ethic stood out during the interview process.

The appointment signals a hopeful turn for a program eager to reclaim its competitive edge, with Jordan’s blend of playing pedigree, championship coaching experience, and multi‑sport involvement poised to spark a turnaround.
