Howard Jordan, a 36‑year‑old coach with a reputation for rebuilding programs, has been appointed head football coach at Groves High School, taking over from Calvin Wells, who steered the team for the past four seasons.
A Program in Need of a Spark
The Rebels have not tasted the playoffs since 2010 and their most recent winning season came in 2014, when they finished 6‑4 under coach Mike Martin. Last year they went winless, dropping 16 consecutive games, a streak that left the school searching for a new direction.
Jordan's Vision and Experience
Jordan, who played high school football at Turner County and earned two state wrestling titles, will also oversee the school's wrestling and track and field squads. His coaching career includes stops at Greenville High, Lithonia High, Hephzibah and Westside‑Macon, culminating in a state championship at Irwin County in 2019.
Leadership Endorsement
Athletic director Kevin Evans praised Jordan's deep knowledge of the game and his infectious energy, saying he is confident the new staff can reverse the team's fortunes.
Looking Forward
The administration hopes Jordan's multi‑sport approach will not only restore competitiveness on the gridiron but also foster a broader athletic culture at Groves. With a fresh philosophy and proven success, the Rebels aim to rewrite a narrative that has lingered for over a decade.
