The Huron County Hockey Association is moving forward with plans to build a new ice rink, but the project has hit several unexpected roadblocks.
Funding the Future of Local Hockey
Through a combination of private contributions and community support, the association has already secured $840,000 in donations from local benefactors and an additional $91,000 from nearby contractors. These funds are earmarked to cover the bulk of the construction costs while the organization continues to pursue further grants and a possible $500,000 contribution from a regional steel manufacturer.
In the meantime, the association will operate out of its existing facility on Soper Road for another season, allowing players and families to keep enjoying hockey while the new venue takes shape. The current site also hosts a learn‑to‑skate program that has attracted 52 participants, underscoring the organization’s commitment to growing the sport at the grassroots level.
With 204 registrants from the previous season and expectations of continued growth, the association remains optimistic. Community leaders, including John Vader and Brenda Theobald, have voiced confidence that the combined efforts of donors, volunteers, and partners will eventually bring the new rink to fruition.
