Hyland Field Honors a Legend
The Saint Mary’s Springs Academy community gathered last weekend to unveil a new football field that now bears the name Hyland Field, a tribute to the program’s most storied leader.
Bob Hyland, who spent 54 seasons at the helm of the school’s varsity program, was celebrated on the field that carries his name. His career includes 522 victories, the most in Wisconsin high school football history, and 17 state championships that have left an indelible mark on the sport.
During the ceremony Hyland took a moment to reflect on five decades of practices, Friday night lights and the countless memories that have shaped his journey. He described the experience as a blend of nostalgia and quiet pride, noting that the field represents not just a venue but a living archive of his dedication.
A Season Opener Overshadowed
The inaugural game on Hyland Field opened the school’s season against Darlington, the reigning Division 6 state champions. While the ceremony celebrated history, the match unfolded with a stark contrast as Darlington routed the home team 35‑0, leaving the new turf marked by a decisive defeat.
Despite the loss, school officials and alumni remain optimistic that the newly christened field will become a cornerstone for future successes. The dedication stands as a reminder that legacy and ambition can coexist, even as the team looks to rebuild on the very ground that honors its most celebrated coach.
