Ian Schupp, once a prolific scorer on the hardwood in Goshen, New York, has swapped his playing days for a new role on the sidelines of SUNY New Paltz men’s basketball.
During his collegiate stint at SUNY Oswego, Schupp amassed 1,014 points, captured two SUNY Athletic Conference titles and earned a reputation as a relentless scorer, finishing his senior season with a 30.4‑point average and a career total of 1,042 points.
Before stepping onto the college coaching scene, Schupp served as a trooper with the New York State Police, a career that ended medically and paved the way for his transition into basketball mentorship.
A New Chapter on the Bench
Now a volunteer assistant under longtime head coach Keith Kenney — who has steered the program for a decade — Schupp is immersing himself in practice drills, scouting reports and player development, all while articulating a clear ambition to one day helm his own team.
The team’s recent performance adds context: last season the program posted a 13‑13 overall record and an 11‑7 mark in SUNYAC play, a showing that underscores both the competitive landscape and the potential impact of Schupp’s fresh perspective.
For a program that has leaned on Kenney’s steady hand for ten years, the addition of a former standout with law‑enforcement discipline may signal a subtle shift in culture, one that could ripple into future successes.
