Johan Sandoval, a standout pitcher for Savannah State University’s baseball team, found himself behind bars last month when U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement stopped him while he was on his way to a workout.
The detention lasted nearly two weeks, during which Sandoval was held in an ICE facility that he later described as a nightmare, a period that left him questioning his own worth and feeling judged by strangers who saw him as a criminal.
After his release, he was ordered to post a $20,000 bond and wear a GPS ankle monitor, a condition that underscores the lingering legal scrutiny he faces.
His attorney has publicly challenged the Department of Homeland Security’s claim that Sandoval tried to flee custody, calling the allegation unsubstantiated and emphasizing the athlete’s cooperation.
Sandoval, who remains committed to completing his senior season with the Savannah State Tigers, expressed gratitude toward his family, teammates, the university and the more than 800 donors who contributed to his GoFundMe campaign.
He is scheduled to appear in court in the coming weeks, though the ultimate resolution of his immigration case remains uncertain.

Despite the ordeal, Sandoval says he will not let the experience derail his athletic ambitions. He hopes to return to the mound and finish the season he has been working toward since enrolling at Savannah State.
