Illinois High School Sports Adopts 35‑Second Shot Clock
The Illinois High School Association (IHSA) has unveiled its policy for the 2026‑27 basketball season, mandating a 35‑second shot clock for every varsity boys’ and girls’ game across the state.
The new rule is intended to speed up play and bring Illinois in line with national trends toward a standardized shot clock.
Schools are required to install and properly mount shot clocks in their primary gymnasiums before the season begins, or risk forfeiting home contests.
IHSA officials have emphasized that districts have been given generous planning time to budget, purchase equipment and coordinate installations, reducing the likelihood of last‑minute complications.
While the shot clock will be compulsory at the varsity level, it remains optional for junior varsity, sophomore and freshman competitions, allowing those tiers to continue using the traditional 30‑second clock if they choose.
The girls’ basketball season is slated to open on November 16, with the boys’ season following on November 23, giving teams a clear calendar to align their preparations.
Craig Anderson, the IHSA Executive Director, said the organization wanted to provide crystal‑clear guidance so coaches, athletes and administrators could plan accordingly.
Anderson added that the board’s decision reflects a forward‑thinking approach, aiming to create an equitable environment for all student‑athletes while modernizing the sport’s pace.
