The Brazilian women's basketball program has called up 20 athletes for a training camp that will ultimately be trimmed to a 12‑player roster for the South American qualifying tournament. Among those invited are Illinois guards Aaliyah Guyton and center Lety Vasconcelos, marking a rare convergence of U.S. collegiate talent and Brazil’s national ambitions.
Guyton arrives with a lineage steeped in the sport; her mother, Adriana Mafra, spent 25 years as a fixture on Brazil’s senior team and later contributed to the WNBA’s Phoenix Mercury. Her father, AJ Guyton, also left a mark at Indiana before turning professional with the Chicago Bulls, giving the guard a basketball heritage that spans continents.
The 2021 FIBA U16 Women’s Americas Championship saw Guyton average 8.3 points, 4.2 rebounds and 2.0 assists, experience that she now hopes to translate onto the senior stage. After transferring to Illinois for the 2025‑26 season, she posted 6.3 points, 2.0 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game, numbers that belied her growing influence.
Looking Ahead to 2027
Vasconcelos, a 6‑foot‑7 center hailing from Miguel Calmon in Bahia, brings a different kind of presence. She has already tasted international competition with Brazil’s youth squads, notably the 2022 U18 Americas Championship, and currently stands as the tallest player ever in the Illini women’s program.
Both athletes will compete in Group B of the qualifying tournament alongside Venezuela and Chile, a bracket that promises intense rivalry and a direct path to the 2027 AmericupW. The final 12‑player squad will be selected after the camp, a process that could see the Illini duo join a storied Brazilian tradition.
