A Promising Outlook for Illinois Basketball
The Illinois Fighting Illini are preparing for the 2026‑27 campaign after delivering the program’s first Final Four appearance in two decades, a milestone achieved under coach Brad Underwood, who has now guided the team to six consecutive NCAA Tournaments with five postseason victories.
Underwood’s tenure includes a Big Ten regular‑season title and two conference tournament championships, underscoring a sustained level of excellence that has placed Illinois among the nation’s most consistent programs.
Roster Turnover and New Faces
The roster will see significant change, with key contributors Keaton Wagler, Kylan Boswell and Ben Humrichous departing, but the team retains a core that includes David Mirkovic, Andrej Stojakovic, Tomislav Ivisic and several other returning starters.
Among the newcomers, transfer Stefan Vaaks is expected to assume a role similar to Wagler’s, while the freshman class brings five‑star prospect Quentin Coleman alongside Lucas Morillo, Zavier Zens, Landon Davis and Ethan Brown, all of whom are projected to make immediate impacts.
The returning lineup accounted for 57.3 percent of the team’s minutes last season, ranking third in the Big Ten and 23rd nationally, and the offense finished second in the country for efficiency, a metric that should remain a strength if the chemistry develops as expected.
Defensively, Illinois climbed to 20th in KenPom’s defensive efficiency rankings, but the coaching staff acknowledges that further improvement is essential to compete at the highest level, especially as the schedule intensifies.
Health and rotation depth remain concerns; a tight rotation means any injury could ripple through the lineup, and the staff is emphasizing conditioning and depth management throughout the offseason.
