Illinois Fighting Illini men's basketball is entering a critical rebuilding phase as it prepares to lose several cornerstone frontcourt players, including David Mirkovic, who may soon head to the NBA Draft, and the graduating Ivisic brothers.
Coach Brad Underwood has made it clear that the program must replenish its interior with a blend of size, skill and versatility, qualities that have defined the team's recent identity in the Big Ten.
A Five-Star Target Emerges
At the center of the recruitment conversation is five-star power forward Benjamin Berrouet, a 6-foot-8 prospect from Dynamic Prep High School in Dallas, Texas. Ranked No. 14 in the class of 2028 and considered the top power forward nationally, Berrouet brings a physical presence that mirrors the style of the departing Mirkovic.
His recent showcase at the Peach Jam, where he posted 19 points, 12 rebounds and seven blocks, has only amplified the buzz surrounding his potential impact at the collegiate level.
Berrouet's combination of strength, athleticism and shooting range makes him a natural fit to fill the stretch‑four role that Mirkovic previously occupied, ensuring the Illini retain a big body capable of both interior defense and perimeter scoring.
Competing for a Commitment
Despite the early interest, landing Berrouet will not be straightforward. The Dallas native is already being pursued by programs such as the Houston Cougars and Texas Longhorns, both of which have deep ties to his home state and could offer a compelling in‑state narrative.
Underwood and the Illini staff remain confident that their vision for player development and their recent track record of producing NBA‑ready talent can provide an attractive pathway for Berrouet, who appears eager to contribute immediately.
If the commitment materializes, the new frontcourt piece could help Illinois maintain its competitive edge in the Big Ten and set the stage for a promising future beyond the current transitional season.
