A Summer Showcase of Talent
The 49th Annual Illinois Coaches Association All‑Star Baseball Games were held at Schweickert Stadium in Peru, drawing nearly 40 senior players from across the state who had been nominated by their coaches and selected by an ICA committee. The event, steeped in tradition, offered a rare glimpse of the next generation of Illinois baseball talent on a single diamond.
In the opening game, the Red team surged to an 8‑2 victory, powered by Braden Curran’s decisive contributions. His performance set the tone for a weekend that would blend fierce competition with promising futures.
Game 2 proved equally dramatic. The Red squad held an 8‑6 lead into the sixth inning before the Blue team rallied, tying the contest and sealing an 8‑8 draw that left fans buzzing. The seesaw finish underscored the thin margins that define all‑star matchups.
Both squads were guided by experienced mentors. Hall’s Tom Keegan and his staff directed the Red side, while Josh Haley, fresh off a Class 2A state championship with St. Joseph‑Ogden, commanded the Blue squad. Their contrasting styles added a strategic layer to the on‑field drama.
Local heroes dotted the rosters. Putnam County’s Johnathon Stunkel, Bureau Valley’s Logan Philhower, and Fieldcrest’s Layten Gerdes represented the Blue team, each poised to continue their careers at the collegiate level.
Curran announced his commitment to Augustana College, while Stunkel will head to Illinois Central College. Philhower and Gerdes both signed with Southwestern Illinois College, signaling the next chapter of their baseball journeys.
The event’s significance extended beyond the scoresheet. With nearly four dozen seniors vetted by coaches and curated by the ICA, the games served as a vital showcase for athletes aiming to transition from high school to college competition. As the sun set over Schweickert Stadium, the blend of triumph, heartbreak, and future promise left an indelible mark on Illinois baseball.
