Illinois Prepares for 2026 Season Opener
The Illinois Fighting Illini have locked in their opening three games of the 2026 campaign, beginning with a Thursday night showdown against UAB on September 3. The contest, scheduled for an 8 p.m. kickoff, will be televised on the Big Ten Network, giving the program a national platform right out of the gate.
A week later, the Illini travel to face ACC champion Duke on September 12, with the game slated for a 2:30 p.m. start and a broadcast on FS1. Illinois previously downed the Blue Devils in Durham, North Carolina, adding a layer of familiarity to the matchup.
The non‑conference slate concludes on September 19 when Southern Illinois visits Memorial Stadium for a 1 p.m. contest, marking the final tune‑up before conference play begins.
Illinois is riding the momentum of a 9‑4 record from last season, highlighted by a victory over Tennessee in the Music City Bowl. New defensive coordinator Bobby Hauck is installing a 3‑3‑5 scheme that promises to reshape the unit, while offensive coordinator Barry Lunney Jr. returns for his fifth year, providing continuity on that side of the ball.
