A Rivalry Rewritten by Blowouts
The series between the University of Illinois and Indiana University has long been a barometer of Midwestern college basketball, with Indiana holding a narrow 96‑94 edge in the all‑time ledger. Yet the Illini have repeatedly shifted the narrative with crushing margins, especially in the last two decades.
One of the earliest modern showcases came in 2000, when Illinois routed the Hoosiers 87‑63 in Champaign. Cory Bradford led the charge with 26 points, setting a tone that would echo through the ensuing years.
Three years later, the Illini posted an 80‑54 win in Bloomington, fueled by Roger Powell’s 22 points and Dee Brown’s 16. The performance underscored Illinois’ ability to dominate both ends of the floor.
The 2009 meeting at Assembly Hall remains the biggest blowout since the venue’s renovation, a 76‑45 victory that left the Hoosiers scrambling for answers.
A decade later, the 2011 contest saw Demetri McCamey contribute 22 points, four rebounds, four assists and a steal, guiding Illinois to a 72‑48 triumph.
The 2022 encounter illustrated resilience. Trailing at halftime, Illinois rallied to a 74‑57 win, with Trent Frazier delivering 23 points and a decisive second‑half surge.
Two years later, on February 15, 2026, David Mirkovic’s 25 points powered a 71‑51 victory, extending the Illini’s streak of double‑digit margins.
More recently, on January 14, 2025, Kylan Boswell and Kasparas Jakucionis each surpassed the 20‑point mark, leading Illinois to a 94‑69 rout that highlighted the depth of the current roster.
Beyond the headline scorers, contributions from players such as Eric Gordon, Kofi Cockburn, Alfonso Plummer, Tomislav Ivisic, Brian Cook, Trent Meacham, Dominique Keller and Mike Davis have woven a broader tapestry of talent that sustains the program’s competitive edge.
