Indiana University announced this week that head coach Jeff Mercer has finalized his coaching staff for the 2027 season by adding two experienced assistants, Matt Morrow and Sean Mullen. Their arrivals mark a deliberate effort to reinforce the program’s player‑development philosophy as the team rebuilds after a wave of departures.
A strategic overhaul for the Hoosiers
Morrow, formerly the Director of Offensive Development at the University of Kentucky, will oversee hitting strategies and infield defense while also serving as the team’s first‑base coach during games. He previously played under Mercer at Wright State University, giving him a deep personal connection to the program’s culture and expectations.
Mullen joins from the University of Nebraska at Omaha, where he directed pitching development. At Indiana he will work directly with pitchers and catchers, while also supporting the staff of pitching coach Matt Myers. Mullen’s own background includes a standout college career at UCLA and an 11th‑round selection by the Tampa Bay Rays in the MLB Draft, lending him a blend of playing and developmental experience.
The new hires come at a time when Indiana has lost several top hitters to the transfer portal and three pitchers to the MLB Draft. Mercer’s focus on recruiting and player growth is evident in the way he has assembled a staff that blends proven collegiate success with professional exposure.
