Hoosiers eye NCAA breakthrough
Indiana University’s men’s basketball program is poised to break a three‑year NCAA tournament drought, as ESPN bracketologist Joe Lunardi now projects the Hoosiers as an eighth seed in the 2027 tournament.
The roster overhaul under head coach Darian DeVries has added seven transfers and four freshmen, creating a depth that could rival the best in the Big Ten. Among the newcomers are Markus Burton, who arrives from Notre Dame, and Bryce Lindsay, a Villanova transfer, while Aiden Sherrell joins from Alabama, Samet Yigitoglu from SMU, and Darren Harris from Duke. The group also features Prince‑Alexander Moody, Vaughn Karvala, Trevor Manhertz and Clemens Sokolov, all of whom are expected to contribute immediately.
Returning sophomore Trent Sisley provides experience, and Sam Alexis, who recently secured a fifth year of eligibility, is slated to add another layer of depth. The coaching staff, led by Darian DeVries, believes the blend of veteran presence and fresh talent positions the team for a deep March Madness run.
Lunardi’s projection places Indiana alongside 11 other Big Ten programs in the expanded 76‑team field, a list that includes top seeds such as Arizona, Duke and Florida. The Hoosiers join Illinois, Michigan and Wisconsin as conference representatives, underscoring the league’s strength this season.
The program’s recent exhibition in Peru, where it posted four wins at the FISU America Games, served as a proving ground for the new chemistry. With the tournament field set to grow by eight at‑large spots, the Hoosiers hope to translate their offseason momentum into a historic postseason appearance.
