Indiana University’s men’s basketball squad has traveled to Lima, Peru, to contest the gold‑medal game of the FISU America Games, a tournament that has already seen the Hoosiers dismantle their group opponents with convincing margins.
Coach Matt Painter has used the overseas trip as a laboratory, inserting freshmen Prince‑Alexander Moody, Vaughn Karvala and Trevor Manhertz into the rotation to gauge their readiness for the rigors of international play.
The bench’s contributions have been a revelation, with Moody’s scoring bursts, Karvala’s defensive versatility and Manhertz’s rebounding presence all emerging in the team’s recent victories over Chile and other regional rivals.
Building Chemistry on the Fly
Beyond individual stats, the tour of Peru is proving valuable for cohesion. Shared meals, joint practices and the pressure of a knockout format are forging a tighter unit, a factor that could prove decisive when the Hoosiers meet the U.S. Virgin Islands in the championship match.
