Indiana State University’s men’s basketball program has announced the addition of SMU transfer Chance Puryear, a 6‑foot‑8 forward whose blend of size, skill and competitive fire promises to deepen the Sycamores’ roster.
Puryear arrives with three years of eligibility remaining after spending two seasons at Southern Methodist University, where he redshirted his freshman year and saw limited action in 14 games last season, recording four points, six rebounds and a block.
High School Stardom
Before college, Puryear dominated at Carter High School in Dallas, leading his team to a 31‑6 record and a regional final appearance. He earned 4A All‑State honors, was named District 13‑4A Player of the Year, and received a nomination to the 2024 McDonald’s All‑American Game.
During his high school career he averaged 14.0 points, nine rebounds and assists per game, and was recognized as District 12‑4A Freshman of the Year and Sophomore of the Year. Rankings sites listed him as the No. 12 overall player in Texas and No. 34 nationally at his position, reflecting a three‑star rating.
Coach Matthew Graves expressed enthusiasm about the new recruit, highlighting Puryear’s versatility and the competitive perspective he brings to practice. “We’re excited to have a player who can stretch the floor, defend multiple positions and contribute in many ways,” Graves said.
Puryear’s eligibility timeline means he will be a factor for the Sycamores over the next several seasons, giving the program a reliable source of front‑court depth as it aims to contend in the Missouri Valley Conference.
The signing also underscores Indiana State’s continued focus on recruiting talent from both in‑state and out‑of‑state pipelines, reinforcing its commitment to building a competitive program that can attract top prospects and develop them into collegiate contributors.
