Indiana University's football program kicked off its title defense with a commanding 52-16 win over the University of North Texas on Saturday, announcing its intent to remain among the nation's elite.
Early in the first quarter, redshirt senior running back Lee Beebe Jr. ignited the crowd with a 67-yard kickoff return that set the tone, followed quickly by quarterback Josh Hoover connecting with Nick Marsh for a 15-yard touchdown pass that gave the Hoosiers a 7-0 lead.
Early Momentum
Turbo Richard added a 38-yard scoring reception from Hoover, extending the advantage to 14-0, while North Texas managed only a field goal before Indiana struck again before the three‑minute mark, with Charlie Becker hauling in a touchdown pass to push the lead to 21-3.
By halftime the Hoosiers had built a 24-6 cushion, trading field goals with the Mean Green but never relinquishing control as the offense and defense worked in tandem.
The second half saw Indiana pour on additional scores, including drives that found Becker and sophomore Davion Chandler in the end zone, while the defense forced crucial turnovers on downs by junior linebackers Rolijah Hardy and Isaiah Jones.
Special teams contributed as well, with redshirt senior wide receiver Tyler Morris returning a punt 36 yards and Grant Wilson capping the victory with a late rushing touchdown.
Hoover finished the day completing 13 of 23 passes for 231 yards and four touchdowns, while Becker recorded four receptions for 64 yards and two scores, underscoring a balanced attack that left the opposition scrambling.
Despite the 36‑point margin, North Texas surprisingly outgained Indiana by two yards, a testament to the Hoosiers' efficiency in converting opportunities into points.
Looking ahead, Indiana will travel to face Howard University on September 12 at Memorial Stadium in Bloomington, aiming to carry this momentum into the next stage of the season.
