When fans watch a baseball game, the action seems simple: a bat meets a ball, a pitcher throws, a fielder makes a play. Behind the scenes, a sophisticated system called Statcast records every movement with millisecond precision, turning raw data into a language that coaches, analysts, and front offices use to shape strategy.

One of the most talked‑about concepts is the definition of a hard‑hit ball. Statcast marks a batted ball as hard when its exit velocity reaches 95 mph or higher, a threshold that correlates strongly with extra‑base hits and power outcomes.

Outfielders are evaluated with a metric called Jump, which captures reaction time and route efficiency, while the likelihood of making a catch on any given ball is expressed as a catch probability percentage.

Finally, sprint speed remains a critical tool. The fastest one‑second window of a runner’s motion is reported in feet per second, and any run completed at 30 ft/sec or higher earns the label “Bolt.” Together, these measurements give teams a granular view of speed that goes far beyond traditional stolen‑base statistics.

As clubs integrate these metrics into player development and in‑game decision‑making, the language of baseball is shifting. What once was judged by simple stats like hits or RBIs is now complemented — and often supplanted — by a data‑driven narrative that emphasizes efficiency, optimal angles, and measurable impact.
