Statcast records the exit velocity, the angle at which the ball leaves the bat, and the precise speed of the bat at the point of contact. A hard‑hit ball is defined as any batted ball that leaves the bat at 95 mph or higher, a threshold that correlates strongly with extra‑base hits and home runs.
Equally important is the launch angle, the vertical release of the ball after impact. Statcast identifies an optimal window between eight and 32 degrees; balls launched within this range tend to travel the farthest and land most often in the sweet spot of the field. When a hitter consistently stays inside that window, the likelihood of a hit rises, a relationship quantified by the metric known as expected batting average, or xBA.
From Expected Outcomes to Real‑World Impact
Expected metrics extend beyond a single swing. xwOBA, the expected weighted on‑base average, blends exit velocity, launch angle and a player’s sprint speed to estimate the true value of each batted ball. By averaging the hardest half of a batter’s contact — referred to as EV50 — analysts can gauge a hitter’s power potential independent of sample size fluctuations.
Bat speed, measured at the sweet spot of the barrel, is another cornerstone. A swing that exceeds 75 mph is considered fast, indicating a higher probability of generating high exit velocities. Complementing this is the vertical angle of the bat’s sweet spot at impact, which, when aligned between five and twenty degrees, produces what Statcast calls an Ideal Attack Angle, a condition that maximizes launch efficiency.
The system also translates complex outcomes into familiar baseball language. xERA, for example, converts xwOBA into an Earned Run Average scale, giving pitchers a clearer picture of the quality of contact they are allowing. Meanwhile, fielding metrics such as Jump highlight athletes with the quickest reactions and most direct routes in the outfield, while a Bolt denotes any sprint that reaches or exceeds 30 feet per second, underscoring elite baserunning speed.
