A Strategic Boost for Iowa Baseball
The University of Iowa has unveiled two key additions to its baseball coaching staff, appointing Matt Gabriel as assistant athletic performance coach and Blaine Harpenau as director of pitching development. The moves, announced on Tuesday, are designed to reinforce the program’s competitive edge in a crowded Big Ten landscape.
Gabriel, who most recently served as a strength and conditioning specialist for the Los Angeles Angels from 2023 through 2026, returns to collegiate athletics with a résumé that includes stints at Iowa, Notre Dame and Southern Mississippi. He holds a bachelor’s degree in exercise science from Bowling Green State University and a master’s in sport coaching education from the University of Southern Mississippi, and he is certified in Olympic weightlifting, emergency care and advanced strength training methodologies.
In addition to overseeing the baseball program’s conditioning regimens, Gabriel will also manage strength and conditioning for the Iowa swimming and diving teams, a dual responsibility that reflects the university’s integrated approach to athletic performance.
Harpenau joins the Hawkeyes after a productive period as a graduate assistant at Concordia University, Nebraska, where he helped guide the team to an NAIA national tournament appearance. A native of Remsen, Iowa, he brings a career pitching record of 55 appearances, a 3.98 earned run average and notable successes at Arkansas State and Kirkwood Community College, where he amassed over 500 strikeouts and 50 wins during his high school career.
Harpenau’s academic excellence was recognized in 2024 when he earned College Sports Communicators Academic All‑District honors, underscoring his commitment to both scholarship and sport. He completed his bachelor’s degree in university studies at Southern Illinois University in 2025, a timeline that aligns with his recent transition to full‑time coaching.
Connecting Experience to Iowa’s Vision
Rick Heller, the Hawkeyes’ head coach, emphasized that the new hires embody the program’s ambition to blend cutting‑edge performance science with traditional baseball development. “Matt’s expertise in strength and conditioning will elevate our athletes’ physical resilience, while Blaine’s pitching pedigree will deepen our strategic depth on the mound,” Heller said in a statement.
Both Gabriel and Harpenau will collaborate with existing staff and university resources, including the National Strength and Conditioning Association, to implement evidence‑based training protocols. Their appointments also tie into broader partnerships with institutions such as Bowling Green State University and the University of Southern Mississippi, where they previously honed their craft.
