A clash of mid‑west powerhouses
Iowa’s basketball program, riding the momentum of its first Elite Eight appearance in nearly four decades, is set to test its early‑season form against a formidable nonconference opponent.
The Hawkeyes have slated a December 29, 2026 showdown with South Dakota, a Summit League member that finished last season at 16‑16 and saw three of its top four scorers depart via the transfer portal.
South Dakota’s interior presence will be anchored by big man Cameron Fens, who posted 14.4 points, 8.7 rebounds and 1.5 blocks per game a year ago, while Iowa will counter with transfer center Andrew McKeever, who arrives with a reputation for shot‑blocking and rebounding.
The matchup is viewed as a strategic stepping stone for Iowa as it prepares for the rigors of Big Ten competition, offering a chance to gel a lineup that also includes returning forward Isaac Bruns and guard Jordan Crawford, both of whom contributed significantly last season.
Coach Ben McCollum and veteran forward Uzziah Buntyn are expected to provide additional depth, while the game will also showcase the Hawkeyes’ new transfer guard Eric Peterson, adding another layer of experience to the backcourt.
