The Iowa Hawkeyes concluded the 2026 collegiate baseball season with a 33-23 overall record, securing their eleventh straight appearance in the Big Ten Tournament. The campaign was highlighted by a series of historic achievements that underscored the program's sustained excellence under longtime head coach Rick Heller.
Milestones on the Diamond
On March 31, Heller recorded his 400th win at the University of Iowa, a milestone that capped a season in which the team posted its 30th victory against Purdue on May 14. Later that month, on April 26, he added his 1,100th career win at Indiana, cementing his place among the most victorious coaches in college baseball history.
The season also produced notable draft results. Gable Mitchell, a senior who earned All-Big Ten Second Team and All-Defensive honors, was selected by the Toronto Blue Jays in the sixth round of the 2026 MLB Draft. Fellow senior Kooper Schulte followed suit, being chosen by the New York Mets in the twentieth round.
Beyond the draft, the Hawkeyes garnered a suite of conference recognitions. Caleb Wulf secured a spot on the All-Big Ten Third Team, while freshman Kyle Alivo earned All-Freshman Team accolades. Redshirt junior Kellen Strohmeyer was honored with the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award, and nine student-athletes received Academic All-Big Ten distinctions.
Team leadership was shared among a group of seniors and veterans, including Ganon Archer, Tyler Guerin, Gable Mitchell, and Kellen Strohmeyer, who were voted captains for the year. The roster also featured five sets of previous teammates and six Division I transfers, reflecting the program's dynamic composition. Assistant coach David Pearson returned for a second stint with the Hawkeyes, while the team wore a commemorative patch honoring former public address announcer Gregg Bentler.
The Hawkeyes' schedule included a dominant stretch in which they went 19-1 when scoring ten or more runs, and they posted a school-record seven All-Big Ten selections in 2025. The program also maintained a robust support staff, employing a team of 27 student managers to assist with operations.
