Iowa Hawkeyes’ Frontcourt Gains Momentum in Summer Practice

Key performances from Trevin Jirak, Cooper Koch and new additions hint at a deeper roster

Summer Workout Highlights

During a July 15 practice session, Trevin Jirak emerged as one of the most impressive performers on the Iowa men's basketball roster. The 6‑foot‑11 forward displayed a polished shot, hitting both a three‑pointer and a baseline jumper, while also showing the ability to drive to the rim and finish with either hand.

Coach Ben McCollum praised Jirak's commitment to conditioning and skill work over the summer, noting that the player has already begun to translate that effort into on‑court production. Jirak also experimented with bringing the ball up the floor, operating in a point‑forward role that could add a new dimension to the Hawkeyes' offense.

A Bigger, More Versatile Frontcourt

The practice featured a notably large frontcourt, with Jirak alongside 7‑foot‑3 center Andrew McKeever and 6‑foot‑8 forward Cooper Koch. The trio's size offers the team a different look, and McCollum highlighted how the combination could address Iowa's need for a stronger interior presence.

Koch, who was a key contributor during the Hawkeyes' Elite Eight run last season, continued to showcase his rebounding instincts, defensive activity and finishing ability. His increased confidence and energy have raised expectations that he will play a larger role this year.
