Iowa’s men’s basketball program has secured a major commitment from the 2027 recruiting class, landing four‑star wing Jack Kohnen of Slinger High School in Wisconsin. The Hawkeyes edged out rival interest from Iowa State and Nebraska to bring the versatile prospect into the fold.
At 6‑foot‑6 and roughly 215 pounds, Kohnen combines size with a guard’s skill set, excelling both as a scorer and a passer. His basketball IQ and high character have drawn praise from coaches and analysts alike.
During his junior season he posted averages of 20.6 points, 11.1 rebounds, 4.7 assists and 1.4 blocks per game, while shooting 51.4 % from the field, 33.1 % from three‑point range and 69.3 % from the free‑throw line.
The 59th‑ranked prospect in the national composite also helped Slinger finish the year 25‑5, falling just short in the WIAA Division 2 state championship game.
Off the court, Kohnen plays for Team Herro on the Nike EYBL circuit, where Miami Heat guard Tyler Herro serves as the team’s CEO, further sharpening his game against top competition.
Iowa’s coaching staff highlighted his basketball IQ and work ethic, noting that his versatility should allow him to impact the game in multiple ways from day one.
The commitment comes as the Hawkeyes continue to actively pursue talent for the 2027 class, a group that currently remains without any verbal pledges.
A Family Affair
Iowa has also extended an offer to Kohnen’s younger brother, Joey, who was the top‑ranked player in Wisconsin’s 2028 class. Joey averaged 15.7 points, four rebounds, 1.8 assists and 1.3 steals as a sophomore, adding another potential future Hawkeye to the pipeline.
The dual recruitment underscores the program’s strategy of building relationships within the state and leveraging family ties to strengthen its roster.
