A Revised Rivalry Landscape
Iowa State Athletics has unveiled a comprehensive revision of its football schedule that stretches from the 2026 season through 2031, reshaping the Cyclones' slate of opponents, venues and rivalry commitments.
A centerpiece of the new plan is the decision to host Bowling Green in 2027 at Jack Trice Stadium, marking the first meeting in Ames since 1979. The Cyclones remain unbeaten against the Falcons, a streak that adds extra intrigue to the upcoming clash.
The schedule also introduces back‑to‑back contests with Tulane in the 2028 and 2029 seasons. The 2028 encounter is set for August 26 at Jack Trice Stadium, while the 2029 game will travel to Yulman Stadium in New Orleans on August 25, giving the Cyclones a rare road test in Louisiana.
In addition, the Cy‑Hawk Series agreement with the University of Iowa has been extended through 2031, guaranteeing 78 total meetings between the two in‑state rivals and cementing the rivalry as a long‑term anchor of the program.
The 2026 season will open on September 5 at noon against SEMO, a game that will kick off the new era of scheduling and set the tone for the challenges ahead.
These adjustments reflect a strategic effort to balance home‑field advantages, broaden geographic exposure and preserve traditional rivalries while positioning the Cyclones for competitive growth over the next five years.
