Iowa State Basketball Heads to Las Vegas for Players Era 16 Opener

Cyclones open against San Diego State, eye a possible showdown with Tennessee, as the tournament adopts a simplified bracket

Players Era 16 Returns with a Simplified Bracket

The 2026 Players Era 16 basketball tournament will open in Las Vegas with a high‑stakes matchup between Iowa State and San Diego State.

The brackets were released on May 21, confirming that the Cyclones could meet Tennessee in the second round, a revenge game after the Volunteers ended Iowa State’s 2025‑26 campaign.

Iowa State’s first game is scheduled for November 24 at Michelob Ultra Arena, followed by a November 26 contest that will pit them against either Tennessee or Maryland, and a November 27 appearance that leads into the championship game on November 28.

Coach T.J. Otzelberger, who guided the team to a 3‑0 record in last year’s Players Era Festival, said the new straightforward bracket eliminates the tiebreaker complications that kept the Cyclones from cashing in on NIL opportunities previously.

The field also includes storied programs such as St. John’s, Louisville, Gonzaga, Alabama and defending national champion Michigan, promising a deep and competitive tournament.

With the format now a simple single‑elimination bracket, the event aims to deliver clearer pathways and more predictable matchups for fans and participants alike.
