Iowa State's men's basketball program is reshaping its coaching staff ahead of the upcoming season, signaling a strategic push to reinforce player development and recruiting.
A Fresh Coaching Landscape
Chuck Ruffing, a former head coach at Bryant & Stratton College who guided the team to a 52‑17 record and its first Division II JUCO National Tournament championship, has been added as an assistant coach. Prior to this, Ruffing served as an assistant at Western Illinois during the 2025‑26 campaign, bringing a blend of intensity and proven winning experience.
The staff overhaul also welcomes Richardson Maitre and Fletcher McGarvey as graduate assistants. Maitre, a former standout at Indian Hills, Florida Atlantic and Samford, will contribute his playing background and film‑analysis expertise to the development of Cyclone athletes. McGarvey, a familiar presence in Iowa State basketball, will focus on challenging officiating decisions on the court, adding a fresh perspective to game management.
Elevating Internal Talent
In addition to new hires, the program has promoted Thomas Pollard from recruiting coordinator to recruiting director and Diante Garrett to director of player development. Pollard, who spent his first three years at Iowa State as a data analytics specialist, now oversees the broader recruitment strategy, while Garrett, in his third season with the team, will concentrate on sharpening players' skills and fostering their personal growth.
Head coach T.J. Otzelberger expressed enthusiasm about the new assemblage, noting the cohesion among the staff and its potential to elevate the Cyclones' competitive edge.
The moves come as the program seeks to translate analytical insights and on‑court experience into tangible results, aiming to strengthen both the roster's depth and its appeal to prospective recruits.
