Iowa State’s Freshman Guard Christian Wiggins Out for 2026‑27 Season

Injury opens opportunities for returning talent and new transfers as the Cyclones reshape their backcourt.

Iowa State University announced that freshman guard Christian Wiggins will miss the upcoming 2026‑27 basketball season after tearing his Achilles tendon. The setback removes a highly touted recruit from the Cyclones' lineup just as the program prepares to build on last year's momentum.

A standout high‑school career cut short

Wiggins arrived in Ames as a 4‑star recruit from Minneapolis, where he capped a stellar senior season at Wayzata High School with averages of 21.4 points, 8.1 rebounds, 4.4 assists and 1.6 steals per game. The Minnesota Mr. Basketball award highlighted his reputation as a sharp shooting guard capable of stretching defenses.

Head coach TJ Otzelberger had previously indicated that Wiggins could compete for a backcourt spot as a freshman, envisioning him as part of a deep guard rotation. With his absence, the coaching staff will look to other pieces already on the roster.

Returning players Killyan Toure and Jamarion Batemon are set to feature more prominently, while transfer Jaquan Johnson from Bradley is expected to start. In addition, incoming transfers Leon Bond III from Northern Iowa and Ryan Prather from Robert Morris may see increased minutes as the team navigates the injury list.

Another freshman, Yusef Gray from Milwaukee, is also battling a labrum injury sustained in his senior year, leaving his availability uncertain. The cumulative effect of these setbacks could force Iowa State to lean heavily on its depth and adapt its playing style early in the season.
