A self‑driven path to Costa Rica
Miles Degner has been chasing a basketball dream since he first dribbled a ball at age three, a passion that soon carried him far beyond the familiar courts of Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
When the chance arose to join Student Athlete World’s international athletics tour, Miles tackled the application on his own, editing highlight reels and crafting an essay without any outside help.
The program’s acceptance rate hovers around 15%, making his selection a testament to both talent and perseverance.
His father, Mike Degner, had not anticipated a teenage son seeking competition abroad, but was quickly won over by the teenager’s meticulous preparation and work ethic.
In Costa Rica, Miles found himself the sole representative from Iowa, squaring off against older, internationally seasoned opponents and learning lessons that extended well beyond the hardwood.
The experience broadened his perspective, teaching him to respect diverse cultures while sharpening his resolve to continue improving.
Now focused on the next chapter, Miles is channeling the trip’s momentum into a clear goal: earning a spot on a college team and advancing his basketball career.
