When the United States opened its World Cup campaign against Paraguay, the small town of Mount Vernon, Iowa, turned its modest Bijou Theatre into a makeshift stadium for a community watch party.
A gathering of hope and passion
The event was organized by the MVLS Youth Soccer Club, a local organization dedicated to expanding the sport’s reach in rural Iowa.
Richard Lewis, president of the MVLS soccer board, said the watch party was part of a broader effort to inspire young athletes and nurture the next generation of players in the region.
Jaden Nelson, a youth player who attended the screening, described the experience as a reminder of why he loves the game and how watching elite competitors fuels his ambition.
Beyond the scoreline, organizers emphasized that soccer teaches teamwork, perseverance and friendship, values that resonate with participants of all ages.
Fans are already looking ahead to the U.S. team’s next match against Australia, scheduled for 2 p.m. on Friday, June 20, hoping the momentum will carry forward.
