A Symbolic Seizure
Iranian authorities have moved to confiscate the assets of former national team captain Ali Karimi, seizing a three‑story villa in the northern city of Lahijan and a set of high‑value mobile phone lines, alleging that the footballer’s financial dealings were linked to Israel.
The judiciary has framed the confiscations as a necessary step to counter espionage and any cooperation with foreign intelligence services, marking the latest chapter in a pattern of property seizures targeting the athlete.
Just a month earlier, two commercial units and four residential buildings owned by Karimi were taken over, underscoring a systematic approach that extends beyond a single incident.
Karimi left Iran in 2022 and has been based in the United States ever since, where he has become one of the most visible voices of the anti‑regime protests that erupted that year, using his platform to criticize the Islamic Republic and to rally diaspora demonstrators.
His outspoken stance has drawn the attention of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, which has placed him on a list for possible extradition, while he continues to speak at rallies and on social media, amplifying calls for change.
