A New Era for Island Coast Football
First‑year head coach Justin Midgett steps onto the sidelines of Island Coast High School after a turbulent 1‑9 season a year ago, bringing with him a fresh Wing‑T scheme that he has refined over years as both a player and an assistant.
The program is already feeling the shift. With 33 athletes reporting for spring practice, Midgett has emphasized a culture built around enjoyment and speed, insisting that the team play fast and have fun while they rebuild.
A key piece of that rebuild is junior Dontavian Wilson, who is swapping his running back spot for the quarterback position. Wilson, alongside fellow emerging leader Jamesley Descollines, is expected to steer the offense as the team prepares for its first spring scrimmage against Aubrey Rogers on May 22.
Midgett’s familiarity with the Wing‑T offense, forged during his own playing days and honed through years of coaching, gives him a clear blueprint for attack. He notes that the system’s emphasis on misdirection and balanced rushing and passing should give the team a versatile weapon against opponents.
Building a Winning Mindset
Beyond X’s and O’s, Midgett wants his players to internalize a simple mantra: focus on having fun and playing fast. He believes that when the kids are relaxed and enthusiastic, the results will follow, turning a program that once struggled to win into a competitive force.
The upcoming spring game will serve as a litmus test for the new system and the players’ adaptation. If the early signs are any indication, Island Coast could be on the cusp of a turnaround that may extend well into the upcoming regular season.
