Honoring a Young Hero
Anders Lee, captain of the New York Islanders, carries the memory of Fenov Pierre-Louis with him every day, a reminder of a friendship that transcended the rink.
Fenov, who died of cancer at just 17 in July 2018, impressed Lee with a maturity and kindness that belied his years. The loss left a void that Lee has since filled with purpose.
In 2018, Lee helped launch the Fenov Scholar program, a scholarship initiative that supports high school seniors who have made tangible contributions to cancer patients and research. Each year, the program awards financial aid to students who have cared for family members, fundraised, or volunteered in oncology wards.
A Legacy in Action
Lee and his wife, Grace, personally review every application, ensuring that each recipient reflects the spirit of service that Fenov embodied. Their involvement extends beyond the application process; Lee frequently visits pediatric cancer patients after Islanders games, offering comfort and inspiration.
The captain’s commitment to community leadership was recognized in 2024 when he received the King Clancy Memorial Trophy, an honor that celebrates players who demonstrate extraordinary humanitarian effort.
Prospective scholars have until June 1 at 5 p.m. Eastern to submit their applications, a deadline that underscores the program’s growing impact and the urgency of supporting the next generation of cancer advocates.
