The New York Islanders have confirmed the hiring of Evan Gold, a longtime Boston Bruins executive, to serve as their new assistant general manager once his contract expires on August 1st.
Gold’s path in the league began as a summer sales intern with the Washington Capitals before he returned for a hockey operations internship, later earning a law degree from McGill University and joining the Bruins in 2015 as Director of Legal Affairs for Hockey Operations, where he advised on salary cap matters under GM Don Sweeney.
During his tenure he negotiated team‑friendly contracts for stars such as Zdeno Chara, Brad Marchand, David Pastrnak and Charlie McAvoy, and later, as assistant general manager, he orchestrated trades that sent David Backes to the Anaheim Ducks and brought Jaroslav Halak back with a bonus‑heavy agreement, while also facilitating deals involving Elias Lindholm, Pavel Zacha and Marat Khusnutdinov.
Since 2023 Gold has overseen the AHL’s Providence Bruins, guiding the club to a 137‑60‑13 record and developing talent including Michael DiPietro, Brandon Bussi, Fraser Minten, Dans Locmelis and Fabian Lysell.
The Islanders, led by teenage phenom Matthew Schaefer, are balancing immediate performance with long‑term potential, and Gold’s analytics‑driven approach will be pivotal as the team prepares to negotiate with Schaefer and manage a rising salary cap.
