Islanders lock in Swedish prospect
The New York Islanders announced this week that they have signed Malte Gustafsson, their 2026 first‑round selection, to a three‑year entry‑level contract. The agreement was first reported by the team's official channels and marks the latest step in the Swedish blueliner's development path.
Gustafsson, a towering defenseman known for his elite mobility and physical edge, will not be part of the Islanders' training camp this fall. Instead, he will return to the SHL for a second season with SV71, the club he helped reach the playoffs last year.
The Swedish team's first game of the new campaign is scheduled for September 19, after which Gustafsson will assess his readiness to move to North America. When his SHL season concludes, he becomes eligible to join the Islanders organization at either the AHL or NHL level, depending on roster needs and his own performance.
A strategic addition for a young defense
General manager Lou Lamoriello praised the signing, highlighting Gustafsson's blend of size, skating and willingness to engage in the physical aspects of the game. The move reflects the Islanders' intent to bolster their defensive depth with a player who can adapt to the smaller rinks of the AHL while retaining the skill set to compete at the NHL level.
Fans will have to wait until the latter part of the calendar year to see Gustafsson in an Islanders jersey, but the organization is already mapping out a timeline that could see him suiting up for Bridgeport of the AHL or earning a call‑up to the big club before the next season begins.
