A Boost for the Island Defense
The New York Islanders announced this week that they have inked Czech goaltender Vitek Vanecek to a one-year agreement, a move aimed at reinforcing the team's depth between the pipes.
At 30, Vanecek brings a career NHL record of over 100 wins, a 2.84 goals-against average and a .900 save percentage, numbers that reflect steady performance across more than 200 professional appearances.
His résumé also includes a silver medal with the Czech Republic at the 2014 IIHF Under-18 World Championship, two appearances at the World Junior Championships and a stint with the Utah Mammoth of the AHL where he posted a 2.93 GAA and .883 save rate in 22 games.
Vanecek's playoff pedigree stretches to ten Stanley Cup playoff games with the Washington Capitals and New Jersey Devils, where he has shown he can handle high-pressure situations.
Team officials said the addition of a veteran netminder with international experience should provide stability as the club looks to build on a promising season and push for a deeper playoff run.
