Italy opened its final preparatory match for the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 qualifiers with a convincing 83-61 victory over Estonia in the northern Italian city of Trento. The win, achieved in front of a modest home crowd, set a confident tone for the Azzurri as they gear up for two crucial fixtures against Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia.
Simone Fontecchio was the offensive engine, finishing with 21 points on 7-of-15 shooting. His ability to draw fouls and convert mid-range shots kept the Italian lead comfortably ahead throughout the contest.
Veteran forward Tommaso Baldasso added 16 points, ranking as the second-highest scorer on the Italian side, while the supporting cast contributed a balanced mix of rebounds and assists.
Estonia, despite the deficit, showed flashes of brilliance. Guard Artur Konontsuk and forward Kristian Kullamae combined for 29 points, but their efforts were hampered by a cold perimeter game.
Italy’s shooting efficiency was a key factor, as they posted a 22-of-34 record from two-point range, underscoring a disciplined inside game. In contrast, Estonia struggled from beyond the arc, managing only 6-of-27 three-point attempts.
The assist tally also favored the Italians, 22 to 16, reflecting a more fluid ball movement and better court vision from the Italian playmakers.

The friendly in Trento served as the last tune-up before the qualifiers. Italy will next travel to face Bosnia and Herzegovina on August 28, before hosting Serbia on August 31. Both opponents present distinct challenges, and the coaching staff is expected to fine-tune rotations in the coming weeks.
Estonia, meanwhile, will test themselves against Hungary on August 27 and will finish the mini-tournament at home against Finland on August 30. The results of those matches could influence seeding and confidence heading into the next phase of qualifiers.
