A Tournament Rooted in Inclusion
The 2026 Blind Baseball International Cup will be staged in Castiglione della Pescaia, a coastal town in Tuscany, Italy, from September 30 to October 3. The event is being coordinated by the Italian Baseball and Softball Federation (FIBS) together with the Italian Blind Baseball Association (AIBxC), marking a collaborative effort to bring the competition to a new audience.
Champion Teams and Historical Context
Cuba enters as the reigning champions after capturing the 2024 edition in London, while Italy had previously lifted the trophy in 2022 after defeating Great Britain in the inaugural final, setting a competitive backdrop for the upcoming tournament.
Leadership on Inclusion
World Baseball Softball Confederation President Riccardo Fraccari has repeatedly emphasized that blind baseball embodies the sport’s universal values, insisting that the game belongs to everyone, while FIBS President Marco Mazzieri has highlighted the event’s role in fostering inclusion, participation and diversity on an international stage.
The Format of Play
The competition follows a distinctive format: each side fields five blind athletes, one sighted player and four or five sighted assistants, a structure pioneered in 1994 by Alfredo Meli that blends skill and assistance to ensure fair play.
Looking Forward
Beyond the matches, the Cup serves as a platform to champion accessibility in sport, reinforcing the message that athletic excellence knows no visual limits and that every participant can contribute to the shared passion for baseball.
