J.C. Acosta, a standout pitcher for Northwestern State's baseball program, has been selected as the 2026 recipient of the F.L. McDonald Postgraduate Scholarship, the conference's highest honor for senior male student‑athletes.
Acosta graduated summa cum laude with a degree in applied microbiology, a achievement that underscores his commitment to academic rigor alongside a demanding athletic schedule.
Balancing more than 300 hours of research, regular season games and community engagements, he managed to maintain a full course load while contributing to the Demon VIP volunteer network and serving in the President's Leadership Program.
His leadership extended to the Office of First Year Experience, where he mentored incoming students, and to the annual Special Olympics competition hosted on campus, reflecting a deep‑rooted dedication to service.
Acosta also led a research team through the university's Joint Venture Program (JOVE), presenting his findings at NSU Research Day and exemplifying the integration of scholarship and sport.
Honoring a Legacy
The scholarship, established in 1996 to honor Dr. F.L. McDonald, a former president of Lamar University and member of the Southland Hall of Honor, celebrates not only athletic talent but also character and community impact.
