A pivotal decision
J.P. Estrella, the junior forward who transferred from Tennessee, announced that he will remain with the Michigan Wolverines for the 2026‑27 season, turning down opportunities elsewhere to continue his development in Ann Arbor.
His choice follows the exit of head coach Dusty May, who accepted a position with the NBA’s Dallas Mavericks, leaving a vacancy that was quickly filled by interim coach Mike Boynton Jr.
Boynton, who previously worked with Estrella at Tennessee, emphasized a culture that resonated with the player, allowing him to bond quickly with teammates and envision a future within the program.
Looking forward
Estrella highlighted the Wolverines’ reputation for developing big men, noting that the program’s focus on post presence, offensive rebounding and shooting aligns with his own aspirations.
During the 2025‑26 campaign he posted 10 points and 5.4 rebounds per game, ranking among the nation’s top offensive rebounders with a 17.3‑percent rate, and he hopes to build on that foundation.
After a season‑ending foot injury, he was granted a medical hardship waiver, positioning him to contribute immediately and bring a 65.1 percent success rate on rim attempts from his Tennessee stint.
