The Furman University athletics department announced the death of Jack Owens, a former Paladin who passed away at the age of 54. Owens, celebrated for his prowess on both the gridiron and the tennis courts, left a lasting imprint on the university’s sports heritage.
During his collegiate career, Owens captured Southern Conference championships in football and tennis, showcasing a rare blend of speed, strategy, and sportsmanship that earned him admiration across the region.
In 2016, his contributions were formally recognized when he was inducted into the Greenwood Athletic Hall of Fame, a testament to his enduring impact on the sport and the community.
A Dual‑Sport Champion Honored
Friends, family, and fellow alumni will gather for a visitation on Saturday, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., at McSwain‑Evans Funeral Home in Newberry, South Carolina, to pay their respects and share memories.
The funeral service will be held the following day, Sunday, at 2 p.m., at Mt. Horeb Church in Lexington, where a celebration of Owens’ life and legacy will be conducted.
Beyond his athletic achievements, Owens was remembered for his leadership, humility, and the mentorship he offered to younger players, qualities that continue to inspire the Furman community.
