Shelstad’s reputation as a score‑first point guard will be tempered by a focus on involving new teammates, a challenge he says he embraces as the squad prepares for a pair of exhibition games in the Bahamas on July 28. The upcoming tour will give the Cardinals their first collective look at how Shelstad fits alongside returning players such as Flory Bidunga and Chucky Hepburn.
Associate head coach John Andrzejek, who will work closely with Shelstad on defensive schemes, believes the guard’s 1.4 steals per game last season represent a new career high that could elevate the team’s perimeter pressure.
