A 30-year-old man from Jacksonville was taken into custody on June 20 after a disturbing episode unfolded at a basketball tournament in Atlantic Beach. The incident, which occurred at approximately 1:55 p.m., took place at 1435 Atlantic Blvd., near Aspire Church San Marco, a location that quickly became the focus of a police investigation.
The Altercation
Jose Rodriguez Rivera, the tournament referee, reported being hit by a player after a disputed call. A witness present at the scene confirmed the altercation, stating that the confrontation escalated rapidly after the referee’s decision. The assailant, who had registered under the name "Dane Johnson" and was known by the nickname "Deejay Johnson" for the event, was identified as the aggressor.
Investigators later linked the suspect to an active arrest warrant that had been issued in June, allowing officers to detain him during a routine traffic stop. The arrest was swift, and probable cause was established for a third-degree felony charge of battery on a sports official.
Legal Proceedings and Detention
Following his capture, Johnson was booked into the Pretrial Detention Facility, where he remains pending further court proceedings. His bond was set at $15,003, a figure that reflects the seriousness with which the jurisdiction views assaults against officials during sporting events. The case underscores the growing emphasis on protecting referees and other sports personnel from violent outbursts.
