Cam Cook’s departure to West Virginia marks the end of a breakout season in which he topped the nation with 1,659 rushing yards and 16 touchdowns, earning Conference USA Player and Newcomer of the Year honors. His exit leaves a sizable hole in a backfield that has been a cornerstone of Jacksonville State’s recent competitiveness.
The Gamecocks return four running backs, among them Andrew Paul and Khristian Lando, who combined for modest yardage last year, while Justus Savage and Jalen Likely saw limited action. Head coach Rich Rodriguez and offensive coordinator Caden Creel are tasked with determining which of these players can step into a larger role and provide the depth needed to maintain the team’s ground‑game identity.
Adding to the mix are several newcomers, including transfer Jacob Cornejo, who posted 854 yards and nine touchdowns at Cumberland in 2025, and local signees Cedric Kouemi, Maurice Winston and Landon Watkins, all of whom impressed during spring drills. Their arrival offers fresh options, but the coaching staff must quickly assess who can contribute consistently enough to keep defenses honest.
Historically, Jacksonville State has leaned heavily on its rushing attack, especially when the passing game stalls. The 2026 season will test whether a more balanced offensive approach can emerge, as the team aims to preserve its reputation for grinding out wins on the ground while integrating new talent.
The preseason focus has centered on replacing Cook and ensuring that at least one or two returning backs deliver meaningful carries. If the Gamecocks can blend the experience of Paul and Lando with the promise shown by Cornejo and the newcomers, they may well preserve the offensive rhythm that has defined their recent campaigns.
